Where does the time go?

Posted by Di on November 2, 2013 at 4:45 AM Comments comments (0)

It's the eternal question which confounds us all - where on earth does time go? Here I am thinking it hasn't been that long since I last left a wrap up of our markets when it appears it was actually back in July! That's a whole other season ago - would be almost two if I left it any longer. Our lovely market has just been going from strength to strength, certainly keeping me on my toes, & just another excuse as to why I haven't been able to update the website as much as I'd like. I've been able to get on a little bit here & there & then either my computer or the website decides that I need a break & will not cooperate so I begrudgingly take the hint ... & here we are!

Where we are at is Leura First Sunday Market's 20th birthday! Tomorrow the market will have been operating for 20 years which is a marvellous achievement ... what was that I was saying about time? Hard to believe the changes that the school & the markets have been through in the past 20 years - one of the major changes that I am aware of is of course the widening of the highway which had a major impact on the market. Previously the school was directly on the highway so it was ridiculously easy for people to stop & get to our markets - once the widening was finished there was a new side street which the school now faces onto, meaning that to get to us you now have to turn off the highway. Not that big a deal but I know that during the actual roadworks it was incredibly hard to keep the market going so it's a wonderful tribute to everyone involved then for enabling it to keep going - paving the way for where we are now.

We've got a stellar line-up of performers ready to entertain at the markets celebrations tomorrow: Linda Wood with her fabulous ukelele; Stuart Hale is an acoustic guitarist & Allara la Ferla a beautiful young woman with an equally beautiful voice. Luckily the school grounds are large enough to have music happening all over so wherever you are you'll be able to enjoy the sounds & soak up the atmosphere!

Of course there will be the selection of 80+ market stalls spread right throughout, from one end of the school to the other so make sure you look in every corner so as not to miss anything.

Very excited to see what the day brings us & hope to see lots of friendly faces.

* Happy Birthday to Us!! *

April, May, June & more!

Doesn't time fly when you're having fun! It's been so full on with the markets over the past couple of months that I've hardly had a chance to scratch myself let alone write a blog! But now that I've scratched it's time to write ...

Lots of great things have been happening with Leura First Sunday Markets this year - we now average around 80 stalls each month with lots & lots of great goodies to tempt us all!

Our hot food stalls include: Rotary BBQ with good ol' sausage sandwiches & bacon & egg rolls; Suzie's Gozleme has yummy Turkish Gozleme with assorted fillings; Deane's Hot Spuds with not only baked potatoes but also hot dogs, nachos, caramel popcorn & honeycomb - all home made; Yum Cha & dumplings from Andy. There's also Tony with his Mr Whippy ice cream van - great in any kind of weather! & of course there is a range of stalls offering take-home treats like Summerland Honey (honey) & Greentrees Gourmet Preserves (jams & preserves). Lastly where would our market be without great! coffee - our new regular coffee stall is Cafe2U so make sure you stop by for your fix.

Now that your tummy is taken care of what other delights can you be tempted by ...

Each month we have performers to entertain - this year local musicians Snez and Dave Vladis have been regulars along with a newcomer to our markets Linda Wood who recently performed at the June market & her blend of pop/jazz/folk playing the ukulele was a hit!

Our resident face painter is Cate from My Mother Goose & the kids certainly won't miss her as her stall has to be the most colourful of the market ... along with colourful Cate herself! Can't help but smile when you see her.

The amazing talents of so many creative souls who frequent our markets never ceases to amaze & delight: art by Phil Layzell; pearl jewellery from Karen Haynes; handmade knits by Sue; button jewellery from jenny at Gitane Jewellery; bags & more from Kirrily at Needle vs Thread; happy pants from Lynne; crochet toys by Kathy; cute kids tees from Cucumber Designs; wood burning art from Irene; cards by Gai; restored funrniture by John & Helen; tea cosies from Rosie ... there's always more each month! & there is also a selection of quality second hand stalls offering books, vintage lace, collectables & more!!!

Now that I've caught you up with everything our next market is Sunday July 7 - hope to see you there!

After a very wet & miserable start to the month saw the unfortunate cancellation of our March market :( it is onwards & upwards to a better & brighter April! :D

The April market coming up soon on Sunday April 7 will not only see over 60 fantabulous stalls! full of locally made arts & crafts goodies, brand new & quality second hand items, delicious food & drink stalls ... there will also be our Easter celebrations! Even though we are a week late this time with Easter Sunday falling on the 31st March it's never too late for chocolate! There will be some FUN Easter craft & activities for the kids as well as an Easter egg hunt & a special visit from someone very special ...

February 2013

What a GREAT day out our market was in February - for everyone! The variety of stalls attending each month is always increasing - so many goodies to choose from - & in particular the food options have improved soooo! much over the past couple of years. This market our new-comers included a * Singapore style food stall with chicken & rice dishes, a * Turkish food stall also selling the always popular hot chips & hot soup (much appreciated after the very chilly start to the day!), * Moreish Macarons - the name says it all, * Andy's Yum Cha & dumplings & due to popular demand * Deane's Hot Spuds * have returned! After a brief foray into delicious fresh salad wraps over summer the public has spoken & De's yummy baked potatoes with toppings along with her delicious nachos & homemade honeycomb are back on the menu!

It's always so nice to see so many people wandering around the market enjoying the day & supporting Leura Public School. Next time you come by to see us make sure you pop around the back & check out the recent addition to the playground - the stunning interactive sculpture of the skink created by local sculptress Niki Martignago who is also a parent at the school. It's a lovely connection with the swamp situated at the back of the school grounds - helping to bring awareness of the local environment to the kids (& their parents) through fun education - as well as being a beautiful piece of art.

So it's true, you never know just what you might find at Leura First Sunday Markets! But you will always find friendly faces & a fun-filled community atmosphere!

The New Year has begun!

If our January market is anything to go by this year is going to be M E G A !! Such a great turn out of stalls for what is notoriously the quietest month for markets - & the weather was spot on. Thank you! oh sun goddess.

A beautiful way to kick off 2013 with such an array of different stalls:

* Crystal Clear Reiki Healing * Russet Apple handmade glassware * Turkish homewares * Vegan bliss balls * Massage * Leatherwork * Homemade marshamallow & rocky road * Fresh juices * Candles by Di * Dream catchers * Yum Cha * Mannin Grove Olives * Bilby Blooms native plants * Nursery decor * Handmade notebooks * Sock toys * Restored old tools * Miss Mini Moo cupcakes * Bags by Cate *

There was such a smorgasboard of food choices ... it was our own little international food court! It's so wonderful to see the sights, sounds & aromas of our market being appreciated as it has evolved over the past couple of years.

Dave was there with his guitar & his take on the blues to keep the crowds tapping their toes. There was also a special 'circus playspace' provided by local women's circus group Ruby Bloomers where kids of all ages came to test out their circus skills ... I wonder how many will be making a career change?!

Market in December

Posted by Di on December 17, 2012 at 6:05 AM Comments comments (0)

So the year is rapidly drawing to a close - & as it does every year it all seems to happen so much faster than the year before! Our December market has come & gone & now we are gearing up to start 2013 with our market in January!

But first, let's go back in time just a little bit to what actually happened in December at Leura First Sunday Markets. Well, to start with it was mayhem! in the lead up with so many new stalls wanting to book in - & then of course there were all the last minute changes which happen every month - so it certainly kept me on my toes! We ended up with a whopping 90 stalls! which is our biggest to date since I have been involved. THANK YOU to all the stallholders who joined our markets & helped make it a great day all round.

Being December it was of course our Christmas market with some fun Christmas Craft & Activities for kids (wonderfully run by some volunteer parents of Leura Public School) before the main event ... a visit from Santa! It was so much fun to see the kids get sooo! excited when he arrived on the fire truck & they all flocked around him - he quite resembled the Pied Piper as he made his way to his seat with all the kids following close behind!

Also at our December market we ran another successful Hamper Raffle. This is a great initiative where stallholders donate something from their stalls to go into one BIG hamper where there can only be ONE LUCKY WINNER! This month it was Jenny Norman who took home the hamper made up of all sorts of lovely goodies - there are some really clever, creative craftspeople at our market! & as a thank you to all the stalls who participated in the hamper raffle there was a lucky draw for one stall to win their next stall with us FREE! This went to Tony the ice cream man - one of our long standing regulars. CONGRATULATIONS to both winners.

Next year will hopefully see our market continue to grow as we have done so over this year - it is fabtastic! to have so many more regular stalls who attend every month - wonderful for our visitors who can rely on some great products for sale along with good food & drinks each every month.

Next market is Sunday January 6 so make sure to come along & check us out! Start the New Year with a fun day out for the whole family at our friendly local market!

Doesn't time fly when you're having fun?!! Here we are: October came & went without a moment to spare as I couldn't even snatch a teeny bit of time to update the website so I HAVE to fill you in as we gear up for our F A B U L O U S 19th Birthday this coming Sunday Novemebr 4 - whoops, that's tomorrow now!

There is soooo! much happening at the markets tomorrow starting off with some great Live Music! with local blues guitarist & our resident market muso Dave Vladis kicking the day off. He will be located near the Centenary Garden wall, up towards the stalls on the top grass area. He will enetertain for a couple of hours & then another of our faves here at Leura First Sunday Markets Snez will take over . She has played with us a few times & is another local singer songwriter - we're so lucky to have so many talented people amongst our community. & as a real treat, set up down in the large undercover area will be the Hills Community Band: this is a wonderful addition to the stalls in this area so don't forget to check them out!

There is of course an A M A Z I N G selection of stalls to wander through ... find some bargains ... get some Christmas shopping done early (not long now!) ... have a laugh & chat with our friendly marketeers! To celebrate our Birthday Cate from My Mother Goose will be on hand with Face Painting & it's always such a treat to see the little creatures wandering throughout the day. Cate will also have some helium balloons to give away so make sure you're early or you might miss out!

It's going to be a FANTASTIC FUN-FILLED day out in the Spring sunshine for all the Family!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

Fantastic! Father's Day

Posted by Di on September 10, 2012 at 10:05 AM Comments comments (0)

What a F A B U L O U S Father's Day market day! The weather was as predicted ... cool first thing (v. cool! thick frost on the ground which stayed til late morning in some places) but then it warmed up to a beautiful clear Spring day. Great to see so many people wandering around, enjoying the day, taking in the sights, spoiling Dads (I hope!).

The Father's Day Raffle proved a big success with a nice crowd sticking around at the end of the market to see if they'd won. Yet again, thanks to the generosity of our lovely stallholders (everything in the hamper was donated) the hamper was overflowing! & the lucky winner, a local family, the Bridgeland's were v. v. happy with their goodies. Thanx everyone!

As a thank you to all the stallholders who donated & participated in the raffle they all went into their own draw to WIN their next stall for FREE ... Congratulations to Lynne Lade (she of the Happy Pants phenom).

There was a nice array of stalls & definitely something for everyone to be found! Our lovely friendly market continues to grow & attract new stalls & entertainment ... Next month a youth musical group is booked to perform, they're a bit larger than our normal acts (about 19 members!) which means they will be located in the undercover area. But don't worry, there'll be plenty of seating for people to sit & listen & enjoy the sounds - or you could also browse through the many stalls which are also located in this area ... what to do, what to do???

If you haven't been to our markets in awhile now is the P E R F E C T time to come on down! The mountains are superb! in the Spring & as we all know we're on the downhill slide towards Christmas (eeekk!!!) so come & check out some of the unique local arts & crafts, gift cards, paintings, clothing, jewellery, bags & wot-nots!

Father's Day Market

Spring has sprung & tomorrow is looking to be a B E A U T I F U L day at our markets. Weatherman is being nice & after a cool start to the morning it is going to be a clear sunny day. & being Father's Day why not take Dad out for the day & come along to our lovely markets where there's over 60 stalls with something for everyone - but especially Dad!

Eddy - our resident 'tool man' - has a great offer to all Dad's with 10% discount at his stall. He has a wide assortment of Brand New & Boxed tools & tool sets, as well there are always some other goodies to check out while you're at his stall.

We're welcoming a few new stallholders tomorrow: Harper's Bucket will be scent-sational with their range of soy candles ... just follow your nose to find them; Roz has an assortment of vintage & collectables; Ken has some great bargains with cd's & dvd's; Kitty brings with her some lovely clothes; Dan will have books, books & more books ... & that's just to name a few! Can't give away all our secrets on here - you'll just have to come along to see for yourself!

& for this month there is a *SPECIAL OFFER* to all customers: just spend $5 or more (in one transaction) & you can go in the draw to WIN a hamper choc-a-bloc full of select goods from our stallholders! Easy, huh?!? The draw is approx. 1.30pm & you must be present to win - or prize will be redrawn.

But it's so easy to while away the hours at our market - in between browsing through the stalls, listening to the great music by local blues guitarist Dave Vladis, munching on some of the yummy food available, drinking the delicious coffee & just enjoying the atmosphere of the day ... where else would you be?

Don't forget ... just look for the rainbow flags! Hope to see you there!
